On April 16th2024, Qlik is launching a highly anticipated capability: custom security roles.

What do custom security roles do?

Custom security roles introduce fine control of data export and access permissions within Qlik apps. This allows you to tailor permissions to your specific needs, enhancing data security and compliance.

The first delivery on April 16th includes the capability to control who can export content. Additional capabilities will be added soon after, such as who can create data connections, reports, and similar.

What does this mean for me?

As part of this update, the existing "has restricted view" space role will gain the ability to export data to Excel. This adjustment is in line with Qlik's capacity-based pricing model, ensuring basic users have essential tools.

If you do not wish for users with the "has restricted view" space role to be able to export data, you will need to edit the User Default role to deny download for all users, and then create a custom role that allows if for specific users and groups.

Stay tuned for more information and resources leading up to the April 16th launch. We are excited about these enhancements and the value they will bring to your data management and security efforts within Qlik.

Thank you for choosing Qlik,

Hi everyone,

I've just created this new role, but I cannot turn off the USER DEFAULT that allows everyone to export data; the option is greyed out for me at least. Because of this, I think, the user I am testing with, can still download the data even though it has the custom role assigned.

I did some testing on this new feature as follows

1. Changing the default worked. So, I set everyone to not allowed to download to Excel. This worked as it should. For Managed and Shared Spaces.
2. Setting up a new Custom Security Role didn't work. So, I set up a new security role to not allow downloading to Excel and assigned to one user. This made no difference (the default was to allow).
3. The Restriction at Space level still applied. That is 'Has Restricted View' access still can't download to Excel (although I prefer this option).

I will leave for now but will test again in about a week.

Overall I'm disappointed (so far) with this release. It just seems like a rushed new release. And this after the outstanding Tabular reporting and new Container releases. I also like the new Windows script object.

The roles set-up before allowed restrictions but USER and also by SPACE. The issue was the various options were Grouped together by Qlik. Rather than allowing a tick the box type option as required by the Business. For example say allow Access + add Notes + PDF reporting but not downloading to Excel as one role.

I was hoping the new feature would allow just that. To add an additional Space Role grouping as required. To add to either Shared and or Managed Spaces. And maybe even excluding the Qlik created Roles

Instead Qlik seem to be moving away from Space access and just allowing access by User. So, a User can either download to Excel or not but not change as required by Space. This seems to be a backward step to me. As well as making the set-up process more complex.

Did Qlik developers / partners want this change? Maybe its easier for large installation but it seems to be a move away from the excellent Spaces feature. In a bad way.

@Sonja_Bauernfeind is there a bug report on this? I encountered similar issues as @robert99 when I tested the feature last week. Is there a known issue?

Great news! So many use cases we have in Enterprise can now be satisfied in SaaS 😊
