Any variable can be changed by the users if put into an "Input Box" object.

Yes, you can use the variable in a input box, or a slider, for instance.

Is one method better then another? I need to use this input for a

calculation that will affect the data viewed.

I think that in your case, the input box is better. You can define some constraints on the variable, in the input box properties.
