QlikView BlackBerry and Java Mobile Client Information

With the 9.0 release QlikView Java mobile client was released. From version 2.0 there are two mobile clients based on java:

  • the BlackBerry client, which uses BlackBerry native API
  • the Java ME client, which uses standard Java Mobile Edition

A recommended client is a smartphone with a good screen, 3G communication (or even better WiFi) and a good Java implementation. Examples of phones where it works well are BlackBerry Bold and Storm and Nokia S60 phones. The current version is 3.0.

The client supports authorization. For security reasons authentication is made using https. This means that you will need to install a SSL certificate on your QlikView Server to use this feature. Authorization is only possible with a 9.0 (or later...) version.

User Interface

The client works like a stripped down version of the desktop client. You make selections by clicking in objects like list boxes, graphs and straight tables. Selections are sent to QlikView server, and the other visible objects are updated automatically. If your device do not have a touch screen a cursor will be displayed and you will move it around with arrow keys or trackball.

Other operations are available from the menus or by clicking on buttons or caption icons. If your mobile device has a keyboard functions are mapped to keyboard keys.

Operations

The following operations are available in the first release:

  • Selection
  • Clear
  • Lock
  • Unlock
  • Back
  • Forward
  • Fast Change
  • Search
  • Create and apply bookmark
  • Minimize
  • Maximize/ Restore
  • Cycle and drill down
  • Zoom in and Zoom out (on high-end devices)

Objects

Not all QlikView objects are supported yet. The following objects are included in the currentrelease:

  • List box
  • Charts
  • Text objects
  • Button
  • Line Arrow
  • Current selections
  • Statistics box
  • Straight Table
  • Multi Box (read-only, no updates yet)

The object rendering is simplified compared to the desktop client. The most important limitation is on font sizes. Most devices support only a limited number of font sizes and even where fonts can be scaled (on BlackBerry devices) small font might be hard to read.

From version 2.0 single object mode is supported. In single object mode the main part of the screen is used for one object, with the rest displaying previews of other objects in the same sheet. Text Objects, Buttons and Line Arrows are not displayed in single object mode.

I have a Blackberry 8220 , Can I use QV9 with this smallphone?

On BlackBerry we need BlackBerry software version 4.5 or later. We haven't tested on 8220 (also known as BlackBerry Pearl Flip) but I believe it is delivered with version .4.6, so it should work.

When I look in the installation logs there are some installations on 8220 and they seeme to be successful. The 8220 has a pretty small screen and no 3G so it is not the best device for QlikView, but it should work.

Hi,

I have used it on a Curve so it does work but really the phone should be 3G and I used it on the Curve 8900 which was not 3G and the performance was poor.
