BlackBerry devices have two different ways to connect to QlikView server:
MDS mode:
In this mode the device is connected to Research In Motion Mobile Data Services(MDS). This will probably be the mode most used at customer installations. The device connects to a MDS server, placed on the company intranet, inside the firewall. Communication between the devices and the MDS server is encrypted. The MDS server should be configured to allow connections to QlikView server, if possible using socket connection over port 4747. For authorization https/http communication between MDS and QlikView server is needed.
Direct mode:
In this mode MDS is not used. Connections are made using the network operators infrastructure, with an APN (Access Point Name) which must be configured on the device, or over a WAP gateway. This is a good mode to connect to public QlikView servers like demo.qliktech.com or our test servers for the beta. This is the way that other mobile phones connect.
Setting up your connection
In version 3.0 we have improved the setup. It now looks like this:

The field Transports shows you what transports are available. It can include the following values:
- MDS a MDS connection is available
- TCP Direct TCP is available
- WAP1 WAP gateway version 1.0 or 1.1 is available (not used by QlikView)
- WAP2 WAP gateway version 2 is available
- WiFi WiFi is available
The radiobuttons below allows you to force QlikView client to connect in different ways. The Default mode should work in most cases, but if you are having problems connecting you might try the other modes. If you are connecting to a QV server that is not on your local network forcing WAP2 or Direct TCP might give you better performance. For Direct TCP to work you need a Access Point Name (APN) set up under Options/Advanced/TCP on your BlackBerry.
Lastly there is a checkbox that allows you to force the device to use WiFi (if available). According to RIM documentation this should not be necessary if your use a MDS connection, the device should use WiFi automatically.
