IdevioMaps for QlikView part 3, region coloring

This is the third post on maps in QlikView using streaming maps from Idevio. The first post covered the basic functionality, the second post line visualisation. This post will cover how regions can be visualised.

Maps with colored regions that describe values can be very useful. Region coloring can be done in different ways and is sometimes referred to as Thematic maps, Cloropeth maps or Heatmaps depending how the rendering takes place.

Geographic and custom regions

Regions can be well known areas such as states, counties, cities etc. But many of our clients have defined own regions for their business. For example for the sake pricing, sales, production, marketing etc etc. Sometimes these regions are made out grouping of zip codes, derived from geographic regions, constructed by hand, or using other methods.

With IdevioMaps it’s possible to use any area, both geographic and custom, as a region. Regions are heavier to render compared to symbols because a region normally consists of many points that together makes a region. IdevioMaps is based on an efficient vector map engine and therefore more suitable to handle large complex regions, compared to simple image based map solutions.

Coloring

The color of the region is controlled by dimension or expression. If the expression returns a text value the color is picked from a color table. If a numeric value is returned the color is blended relatively to the max and min in the current selection. Meaning that a high value yields a more red color and low value gets a more blue color. This is also called color ramp, color gradient or color progression.

If the standard colors and the default color ramp in IdevioMaps aren’t enough, any of the QlikView built-in color functions can be used such as ColorMix, RGB, ARGB, red(), blue() etc. It’s easy to construct a custom color ramp using expression and the QlikView color functions.

Configuration

The map is connected to the business objects using the property dialog for the map window. A region is specified with a key and a set of polygons. The region polygons are loaded and colored when the selection and the values changes. Small changes in color intensity can be hard to detect, therefore it's convenient to combine a region color with a symbol that describes the value.
